Select the Dark theme for Visual Studio. Create a project, add a web form, and add the Ajax Control Toolkit to the solution. Add the AJAX Control Tookit to the Toolbox and gridlines will suddenly appear in the main toolbox on the left side of the screen as you scroll up and down the list of controls. Adding Ajax Control Toolkit to Visual Studio 2015 Causes Issue with Toolbox in IDE
Answers approved by DevExpress Support
Hello Joey,
Thank you for your patience. We have resolved this issue. You can update your AjaxControlToolkit installation using the attached AjaxControlToolkitVsPackage.15.1.4.0.vsix file. We look forward to your feedback once you have had the opportunity to install and check the new build.
During a remote session, the issue did not occur because we were using a newer build. It is only necessary to reset a toolbox after uninstalling the previous ACT build.
The necessary changes will be available in the next official minor version that will be released this month.
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us. While this issue is unknown to us, I suggest that you perform the following steps and check if the issue goes away after a particular one:
- Reinstall ACT.
- Temporarily disable all installed (Tools -> Extensions and Updates -> Installed) Visual Studio extensions.
- Run VS in safe mode via the "devenv.exe /safemode" command.
- Run VS via the "devenv.exe /resetsettings" command (i.e., reset the VS settings).
Please keep us informed of your results.
P.S. Note that you can capture a video from your desktop using special software, for example, the Jing tool.
The problem only appears after I add your Ajax Control Toolkit to the Toolbox.
Hello,
Would you please take another moment to review my previous comment with a request to perform certain steps and check if the issue goes away after a particular one?
>>The problem only appears after I add your Ajax Control Toolkit to the Toolbox.
In addition, please clarify if you performed any steps for manually adding toolbox items or used a regular installer.
This information will allow me to provide you with a more accurate guidance. Your time and cooperation are greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your acknowledgement of my time. I have spent a large number of hours troubleshooting this issue myself. I have duplicated this problem on every Windows 10 PC I have tested running VS Community 2015 with the Dark theme enabled after adding the Ajax Control Toolkit (6 PCs total that I have tested). I have tried both NuGet and the Installer from your web site with the same results.
I reinstalled ACT, however, the problem persists. I tried both NuGet and the Installer from your web site.
When I disable the Ajax Control Toolkit extension the problem goes away.
In safe mode the problem persists.
After reset the problem persists.
Hello Joey,
Thank you for informing me of your results. I assume that this issue is related to a known Visual Studio Toolbox problem (reproducible in a high DPI). Please refer to the T209141: DevExpress Icons are not shown in Toolbox VS2013 report where we discussed it in greater detail. Note that it does not go away after setting the text size back to 100%. Would you please perform the steps provided in the [HDPI] Visual Studio 2013 - Winforms toolbox icons beside items are missing for 3rd party controls which embedd icons as resource thread (open the "Workarounds (1)" section) by the Microsoft Windows Forms Team and confirm if the issue goes away
It would be also helpful if you provide us with a screencast that tracks your steps and related results. I greatly appreciate your time and effort.
Hello Mike. I went through your steps and it did not resolve the issue. The problem persists. I also tested this on the same 6 PCs I referenced earlier and all exhibit the same behavior. Attached are the screenshots demonstrating that the problem starts after you install the Ajax Control Toolkit. Please let me know what additional information you require.
Hello,
Thank you for the clarification. Our developers were able to reproduce this issue and now are working on fixing it.
We will update this ticket as soon as we get results.
Your patience is appreciated.

Thank you.
Hello Joey,
We are investigating the issue and trying to determine what causes it.
To speed up the process, would please provide us with the AJAX Control Toolkit installer and DxDiag log files?
The AJAX Control Toolkit installer log is located in the "C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Temp\ACTInstaller_<GUID>.log" file.
To get the DxDiag log, run 'dxdiag' via Cortana, wait until it gathers all the information, then press the 'Save All Information…' button and save the file.
Finally, please attach both these files as a comment to this ticket.
I am looking forward to your response.
Hello. Attached are the files you requested. I will also upload files from another PC that is experiencing the same issue later today. Thank you.
Hello Joey,
According to the AJAX Control Toolkit installer logs, Visual Studio 2012 and 2013 are installed.
Do you face same issue with the Visual Studio 2012 or 2013 Dark theme?
Hello. I just tested and my results are VS 2012 and VS 2013 do not have the issue. The issue appears to be limited to VS 2015. I also noticed in VS 2015 that the issue is not just limited to the Dark theme. It occurs in the Light theme as well, however, it is not as noticeable because the gridlines are grey/white which are not as contrasting. Attached are the screenshots from the test.
Attached are the files you requested earlier on a different PC experiencing the same issue.
Hello, do you have any update on this issue?
