New editor should be able to load from or save to a string in RTF format, so that data can be easily persisted in a database.

But as 9.1.0 may be a while in coming, is there a workaround in the meantime?
I've tried memoryStream methods but can't make them work (see Q143621).

Please refer to the XtraRichEdit LoadDocument from stream not working? thread it the SC. It illustrates how to accomplish this task. Please try this solution and let us know the results.
