Add a capability to display a real count of records in the ASPxGridView even when a grouping is applied

Grid pager includes grouping rows in its item count

created 16 years ago

I am going to join the group of people who have complained about this behaviour.
When column grouping is used on the gridview, the PageCount includes the grouping rows in its item count.
This is confusing to our users, who only expect to see a count of *data rows*. Our users are accountants, and they notice when figures are incorrect or don't tally up. This produces queries to our support department, who then have to try to explain why the grid acts in this way.
I have read your explanations about why the count is done this way, and to be honest it seems you guys have over-thought this one. The users can tell the difference between a grouping row and a data row. If a page size is set to 10 rows, with three collapsed grouping rows, but the pager shows 1000 records, even the most average user knows that figure means that there are 1000 data rows but they are not visible because the groups are collapsed.
I know you have stated that you will not change this behaviour, but why not make that the default behaviour, and implement a flag or something that we can set to tell the grid to count only data rows? And maybe include a flag to tell the grid to include hidden data rows in its count, so that the user knows there are 1000 other data rows hidden (collapsed) when they have just the one group expanded?

Hi Matthew,
I believe I answered this question in the Pager reports incorrect item count when grouping by column bug report. If you want us to add this feature, please create a new suggestion in the support center and explain in detail how the grid should work. I do not know what the grid should do if there are two collapsed group rows hiding 1000 data rows. What should the grid do when the end-user clicks the NextPage button? The fact is that in this case, the grid knows about two group rows only and it shows them in its client area. So, if you want us to add this feature, please explain this functionality in as many details as you can, so that we can implement the required functionality in the future.
Thanks,
Plato
